Sunday shopping in Eindhoven finally agreed on

The debate on Sunday shopping in Eindhoven has finally been concluded. A majority of the shopkeepers in the inner city and in ‘winkelcentrum’ (shopping mall) Woensel are going to open their shops every first and last Sunday of the month.

Since 1 July 2013 the shop-closing time has changed. Municipalities were allowed to decide for themselves whether or not to allow shopping on Sundays. The matter gave rise to heated discussions in the City Council, but eventually it was decided in December last year that the shops in Eindhoven could open on all Sundays.

This means that the retailers themselves decide on which Sundays they will open their shops. No special license will have to be applied for any longer. The retailers associations were asked to list the shopkeepers’ preferences.
