National Literacy Week has started

Today, Literacy Week has started. This year’s theme ‘book your future’ focusses on the importance of reading and writing for creating a solid future.

At the Eindhoven primary school ‘De springplank’, great attention is given to this subject. This morning, together with more than 400 other primary schools nationwide, they took part in a reading relay. Every class reads during 15 minutes. Then, a book is opened somewhere else in the country.

The book distributed among primary schools is called ‘O nee, niet weer een boek’ (‘Oh no, not a book again’) and is about an elephant that does not like that all his friends offer him a book for his birthday. In the end, the elephant discovers that reading can be fun.

Wednesday afternoon, Ster College will be present at the education market held at the Witte Dame. They will be giving information about the courses they offer to people who are illiterate.

Every year, a Literacy Prize is awarded to people who commit themselves to increasing the country’s literacy. The award ceremony takes place in the Efteling today.
