Increased unemployment in the region

Unemployment figures for the Eindhoven region are on the rise, with 18,400 registered unemployed.

According to figures from the UWV (Dutch unemployment agency), unemployment is 37% higher than one year ago. Construction, industry and governmental sectors are being hit hardest, with many losing their jobs. The young and seniors are having the most difficulty finding work. Unemployment figures are expected to rise by 25% in 2013 and 2014, so growth will level off.The local economy in the Eindhoven region grew by 3% in 2011 but is now receding. Last year saw a drop of around 2%. According to the UWV this is because the region is sensitive to fluctuations in the economy.
