TU/e spin-off develops alternative marine fuel for Maersk shipping

EINDHOVEN – Progression Industry BV, a TU/e spinn-off, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Danish company Maersk Oil Trading. Progression Industry is going to develop a durable marine fuel called CyclOx (on the basis of lignine) for Maersk Oil Trading. Lignine is a second generation byproduct that is generated in large quantities during bio-ethanol and paper production and is usually burnt for process heat.

The molecular composition of CyclOx is able to minimize the soot emissions of diesel motors. As cars and lorries become cleaner, the shipping industry is responsible for a growing percentage of the global emissions. The extent and technical details of the contract are not being disclosed. Maersk Oil Trading provides fuel for the whole fleet belonging to the A.P.Moller – Maersk group (the world’s largest company dealing in container ships and platform supply ships). Maersk Oil Trading is the first client for this young company from Eindhoven.
Progression Industry is a company that develops technology for the fuel and automotive sectors. WEDACS, a turbine inlet for petrol motors that generates power from waste heat is another technology the Progression Industry that is currently being developed as part of a European project together with the Volvo Car Corporation amongst others.
