EINDHOVEN / BORN – Eindhoven’s VDL finally acquires NedCar. The two contracts, on the production of Minis by BMW in Born and on the sale of the factory, that formally still needed to be signed are both signed now. Previously, NedCar’s current owner, Mitsubishi, already closed an agreement in principle with VDL on the acquisition.
This puts an end to the uncertainty about NedCar’s continuation. With the deal, the Limburg car factory can start building Minis for BMW starting mid-2014. For NedCar’s 1500 employees dismissal was formally requested, but they should be reemployed rom 2015 on.The rescue of NedCar is a blessing for Limburg. The car factory went from nightmare to dream scenario. “NedCar is a survivor pur sang,” responded Henk van Rees, chairman of the union FNV Bondgenoten.According to Wim van der Leegte, director of VDL, it is quite possible that Jaguars and Land Rovers will also be made in the Limburg car factory NedCar . The first talks about this have already been conducted.NedCar is the only major car factory in the Netherlands.
