STDs on the rise after Carnival

Tuesday, 27 March 2012
EINDHOVEN – A significantly higher number of youths have contracted sexually-transmitted diseases in this year’s carnival celebration period, as compared to previous years.

The GGD (or the municipal’s health service) in Brabant had, after carnival, offered free STD tests. The test results were shared via mobile short messaging service (SMS). Out of the 250 Brabantse youths who took the test, 20% came up positive. In Tilburg, 49 people turned up for the test; 12 were from Den Bosch, 93 were from Breda, and 96 were from Eindhoven. Chlamydia was the most common disorder. On the average, 13.5% of the people who have themselves tested for STDs have positive results. In the case of the free test after carnival, the numbers were higher. Due to the high turnout rate, the GGD is planning to offer the free tests again next year. Source: Omroep Brabant
